Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries is proud to showcase Columbia County artist Linda Cross in an exhibit of mixed media art and drawings at the Institute’s gallery located at 199 Main Street in Beacon, New York.
Exhibit curator Linda Stewart observes that Cross’ work “delivers an interpretation of more than river, more than that which lies below the water or between its shores.” Stewart suggests that as an artist, Cross “translates its language along with its joy, its turbulence and its anger. Her work is a mirror for its moods.” Stewart further explains that Cross’ relief landscapes, made from paper pulp formed around shapes, are tactile abstractions of temporal reflections in the river that reflect both the debris and detritus of the river and the natural surface tensions of the water. Although Cross’ work does not depict specific places, the new reliefs found in this exhibit transition from geographical imagery to a more personal vision. Dark mounds protruding from the surface combined with bold outcroppings are turned on end in a dizzying perspective, creating a visceral dialogue between illusion and reality.
“Working in relief allows me to combine aspects of both painting and sculpture, deliberately creating an ambiguous nature in which the physicality of the sculptural objects is combined with hints of illusionistic painting and shifting viewpoints,” Linda Cross explains. Her recent work reflects an intensity that builds upon more reality-driven pieces of the early 1990s.
Cross’ work for this exhibition has been funded, in part, by a grant from The New York Foundation for the Arts.
