River University 2013 launched with a quick pace last week as students learned the foundations of the power of blogging and water policy from guest speakers Andrew Revkin, author of The New York Times "Dot Earth" blog and Michael C. Finnegan (see bio above), former General Counsel to Governor Pataki respectively. Mr. Revkin, a prize-winning journalist, online communicator and author who reaches several million individuals each year with his NY Times blog, walked students through the evolution of his blog. Mr. Finnegan, who led negotiations for the landmark New York City Watershed Agreement, described the role of policy in solving watershed disputes in New York State.
Week two of River University began with a trek atop Mt. Beacon allowing students to gain a valuable perspective with views of the cities of Beacon and Newburgh, shedding light on human interaction with the Fishkill Creek watershed. Students will make their way to the Hudson River to explore its ecosystem aboard the sloop Clearwater later this week.
